19th Century Mahogany & Marquetry Dresser with Medallion of Giovanni Maffezzoli

About the Item

Impressive 19th century 6-drawer dresser cabinet, finely crafted of carved mahogany solids, including large older period salvage framed medallion of perspective marquetry composed in a variety of wood inlay species, attributed to the Giovanni Maffezzoli school (circa 1810-1830), in the tradition of his mentor Giuseppe Maggiolini. Colored inlays form Roman spa pools amidst ancient aqueduct architecture and statuary of the garden retreat, with tranquil patrons. Baroque inspired garland complete with rosettes, scrolls & baccelature frames the medallion art. Likely commissioned for a noble family, the handcraft composition & detail is of the finest quality. Cabinet width-tapering concave side panels. Exquisite carvings border and define each panel & frame. Bronze & brass hardware. Beige colored Perlato Sicilia shaped marble inset. Mirror frame rests on top of the cabinet (removable). Old mercury glass with good reflectivity. The right side of the cabinet presents 3 visible drawers, while the left side drawers are partially obscured by the door-mounted medallion element. The centered & hinged door swings open from the right to reveal the full larger width of 3 left drawers, with flame mahogany grain fronts. Door lock & key (which secures the 3 left drawers behind the locked center door). Complete matching bedstead (bed frame including headboard, footboard, side rails - Cal King size adapted, and oval marquetry medallion) as well as night stand pair are available. See separate listings. Measures: 61.5" W x 24" D x 75" H (inclusive of framed mirror) Dresser/ cabinet only: 61.5" W maximum back, tapers to 52" W front , 24" D, 33.5" H Mirror 41" H (sets on dresser, total 75" H).

"Iconic Mid-Century Modern Fratelli Saporiti Italian bedside dressers, nightstands or chests by Giovanni Offredi, circa 1970s. Made of high gloss birdseye featuring six drawers and two lifting compartments for books, jewelry or valuables. Provenance : Jerome Schottenstein Estate, Columbus Ohio. Jerome was was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist, co-founder of Schottenstein Stores Corp. The Schottenstein family were Lithuanian immigrants who began an extensive business Empire in the late 19th Century. Schottenstein Stores owns stakes in DSW and American Signature Furniture; American Eagle Outfitters, retail liquidator SB360 Capital Partners, over 50 shopping centers, and 5 factories producing its shoes and furniture. It also holds an ownership interest in American Eagle Outfitters, Wehmeyer in Germany, Cold Stone Creamery and The Mazel Company. Since 1950, Saporiti Italia produces some of the most sophisticated and advanced pieces of furniture of the history of Italian design. There is a leit motiv in all the company's creations: each new piece is history in itself. Catching time off balance and anticipating the future are both the Challenge and the vocation of Saporiti Italia. Each item created and constructed by the company is slightly ahead of its time and it is destined to last, both in form and function, until the next era. The company, founded in 1950 by Mr. Sergio Saporiti and still under control of the Saporiti family, has contributed to the creation of milestones in the history of Italian design. During these decades of fast growing economy and fast changing social environment, Saporiti Italia set its particular international and avant-garde style. The first pieces of furniture of the Saporiti of the times were clearly influenced by emerging Scandinavian design, but with a special touch of Italian elegance in the use of finishing and materials. In 1965 Sergio Saporiti started a fruitful and “scientific” collaboration with one of the masters of Italian architecture and design of all times: Alberto Rosselli. Together they created a series of pieces of furniture – the Jumbo chair...
