19th century Scottish dresser

About the Item

Scottish Lowlands Dresser in painted pine. Simulated oak and mahogany. The main body of this piece is in simulated oak, this where a yellow ochre colour is applied and then a darker colour is over-painted on the top and then using combs or feathers, a pattern is produced. The drawer fronts and columns are stained in a red colour to look like mahogany. These dressers are really only found in the Lowlands of Scotlan . There are examples in the national museum of Scotland. Similar dressers are featured in Scottish Vernacular Furniture by Bernard D. Cotton p. 95-103
