Georgian Oak Dresser with Rack

About the Item

A good quality early 19th century Georgian oak dresser having original shaped canopy rack with three shelves over three drawers to frieze and three false drawers flanked by panelled cupboard doors with replacement turned brass knobs raised on original shaped bracket feet. This elegant, functional, Georgian dresser is a nice practical size and retains a very good colour to to the oak. It is in relatively good condition for an item which will certainly have been used and abused for almost every day of the 200+ years of its life. Originally it would probably have sported wooden knobs, but these have now been replaced by tasteful, Georgian style brass examples which work very nicely on the piece. There is the expected old marks, scratches, scuffs and scrapes, but these have now blended in nicely and as an extra assurance the item has been through our workshops for a clean, tidy and natural wax in the traditional manner before being offered for sale. Dressers are generally regarded as freestanding, functional, statement pieces for both storage and display and they were incredibly popular in rural settings during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Almost every house would have had at least one. Circa 1800. Measures: Height 79.5in. Width 62.5in. Depth 18in.

An Attractive And Very Good Quality Late 18th Century, George III Period, Oak Dresser Base Of Good Colour And Patina Throughout, Having Three Frieze Drawers With Replacement Knobs, Over Elegant Turned Upright Supports With Original Potboard Shelf And Rare Panelled Back Below. As suggested by the name the original purpose of a potboard shelf was to store all manner of pots and pans. These pots and pans were often still wet, very heavy, or possibly still hot when placed back onto the storage shelf and this is the reason that we regularly find potboard shelves damaged beyond repair, or in rather ugly condition visually. No such problem with this particular piece however, it has a perfectly functioning and attractive potboard shelf which has an extremely rare panelled back to it, something we have only seen once or twice before. This dresser base is a good size, not overpoweringly large, whilst at the same time being perfect for a wide ranging variety of spaces around the home, due to its narrow proportions amongst other things. It is also of coursevery attractive and retains a good colour and patina which is a consequence of years and years of hard graft...
