Rare Satinwood George III Marquetry Cellarette of Octagonal Form

About the Item

A rare inlaid satinwood cellarette with elegant inlaid sides and top: tulipwood cross banding and ebonized stringing form complex panel arrangements. The marquetry top is divided into wedges with a lighter satinwood patera set inside a harewood oval at the center. Square tapered legs terminate in casters with fine tulipwood brackets and harewood inlaid arcs at the tops. Ca. 1790. Satinwood is a rare and highly sought after South East Asian wood known for its luminous lustre and unusual light golden coloring. Satinwood pieces were the height of furniture fashion in the late 18th century. The mahogany interior is fitted with a felt covered bottle rack for 14 bottles. Very good antique condition, good finish, with underlying marks/and dings typically of age and use. Original brass handles at the sides and kite escutcheon, lacking key, brass knob is later.
