Antique 19th Century English Georgian Slant Front Desk or Secretary

About the Item

This classic slant front desk or bureau was made in England in the early 19th century. It was made in the finest quality watered European oak. The secretary is elevated on bracket feet. It features four drawers fitted with the original brass ajour cut bat-wing period swing grip handles. The bureau has a beautiful and elegant interior that features 6 small drawers, six pigeonholes, and a compartment with a small door. The door has crossband inlay panels and has a working lock with key. The door is flanked by two classic columns that refer to “the pillars of Hercules” and have extensive symbolic meaning. In Sir Francis Bacons, Novum Organum, the motto along the base of the pillars says Multi pertransibunt et augebitur scientia ("Many will pass through and knowledge will be the greater"). Condition details: The desk was cleaned inside and out. Minor repairs were done. Small gaps in the drawer bottom were closed as was done with the back cladding. The wax finish was revived to enhance the rich patina. The piece is in very good and solid antique condition. All locks are working with all keys.
