Antique English George III Mahogany and Marquetry Inlaid Bureau, 18th Century

About the Item

This antique bureau is late 18th century in date and has been beautifully crafted from top quality well figured flame mahogany which has been richly later inlaid with superb marquetry decoration comprising a large decorative urn and several garlands of flowers. In terms of storage, this antique George III bureau will not disappoint - there is plenty of space on offer from the four full width and oak lined graduated drawers, all fitted with decorative brass handles. When the fall front is opened it reveals a useful marquetry and line inlaid fitted interior that contains a total of eight small drawers, various pigeonholes together with a useful cupboard and two secret compartments. All in all the interior storage is very extensive and ideal for storing your stationery, office items and, of course, your personal items. The bureau fall is fitted with an attractive inset gold tooled green leather writing surface which gives it a very distinctive look as well as enhancing the user's writing experience. The bureau is raised on elegant bracket feet and is complete with it's working locks and keys. Dimensions in cm: Height 103 x width 95 x depth 52 Dimensions in inches: Height 40.6 x width 37.4 x depth 20.5 Flame mahogany Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.
