About the Item

This magnificent Secrétaire à Abattant / Secretaire / Secretary is a fine example of period Biedermeier. Its strong distinctive architectural lines and beautiful flame birch veneer finish, implies that it was made in Northern Germany and dates circa 1825. The craftsmanship continues when you lower the drop front panel and reveal the interior fitted compartments. Once again the emphasis is on architectural features and details, with richly grained birch and burl walnut veneers accented with ebony trim. Note the block wall foundation on each side of the black trimmed steps. Those blocks are actual pieces of burl veneer with an accent wood veneer for the mortar, truly spectacular. There’s more the steps are a front for a center drawer and once opened and removed, the block walls can now be accessed to open a hidden drawer on each side. Just how many compartments are incorporated in this handsome secretary? Starting from the top: One large curved door cabinet One hidden drawer in the molding detail One long drawer Four small drawers One center cabinet with door Three hidden drawers behind the cabinet door Four open compartments Two hidden pocket drawers behind the open compartments One stairstep drawer Two hidden drawers on each side of the stairstep drawer Three full size drawers That’s a total of 23 compartments / storage, including eight hidden. That’s lots of space for all your goodies, public and private. Commonly found in the Drawing Rooms in the 1800s, these large scale secretarie desk were considered prize possession and usually placed in the most prominent room in the house.
