Monochromatic Open Display Shelve, Pierre Castignola, Blue Plastic

About the Item

Amsterdam based designer Pierre Castignola (France - 1995) graduated Cum Laude from the Design Academy in 2018. He aims to have a conceptual background in his work while focusing on a surprising, intriguing and surrealist outcome. His conceptual focus belongs in the perception of the world, with a strong fascination for semiotics and symbols to lead to a radical and critical design. He sets out to redefine the paradigm of creation and consumption. Copytopia is often viewed as the artist’s main body of work. Fascinated by the complexity and symbols surrounding the infamous chair commonly known as monobloc, Castignola employs discarded plastic garden chairs as raw material, which he then cuts and reassembles to constitute a variety of everyday objects. With the use of existing pieces of furniture as part of new ones the artist sets out to question the legitimacy of intellectual property, while simultaneously prompting us to reevaluate our relationship with the objects around us, bringing value back to the ones some might consider disposable. Inspired from the artist’s tendency to hoard curiosities and rarities, the Monochromatic Open Display Shelve acts as a pedestal in a household. Presenting a selection of object that aims to intrigue visitors, the slopes from where they stand remind us of a certain silliness in this behaviour, overpowering them while finding a balance in their position. By using an item as ubiquitous as the classic lawn plastic chair, it appeals the viewer to relate this object to something personal, the fact that it is cut, disassembled and then reassembled creates a sense of wonder about the reason behind it and a speculative phase begins. The object keeps a very simple and basic function : to display. Wether it is a rare antique, a book or even an article of clothing. Nothing is hidden, everything is spotlighted.
