Antique French Art Nouveau Vitrine

About the Item

This unusual cabinet, though plainly Art Nouveau, pays homage to Louis XV. It is bombe, with gently swelling sides and front. This ebeniste really knew his trade, the drawer fronts are all carefully shaped and joined to conform to the overall conception, the drawers are in mahogany, a sure sign of quality. The cabinet making is to the highest standard. Although there is ample room for display, the painted Vernis Martin panels, depicting cherubs and a Scene Galante are in themselves highly decorative and are very evocative of an 18th century sensibility. The gilt bronze mounts and carved panels are very much in the Art Nouveau taste; they are naturalistically modeled as tendrils, rushes, and various leafy forms, the photo of the central bombe panel gives some idea of the quality of the mounts the upper door with bombe glass panel is particularly striking with its crisp plant -form ornament. The use of organic forms combined with the Watteauesque painting and the overall shimmering effect of Vernis Martin lacquer creates a cabinet both useful and highly decorative.
