About the Item
The stunning cabinet in the Napoleon III style and of the sam period, featuring inlaid Boulle work panels of brass and fine scarlet tortoise shell, with cast ormolu mounts depicting mouldings of acanthus leaves and two torsos of a male figure on each side; the vitrine divided into three compartments with a shelf in each and glass windowed doors.
The Napoleon III style, as exemplified by this exceptional Boulle work vitrine, was a revivalist style that existed under the patronage of Napoleon III, who ruled France from 1852 to 1870. Heavily influenced by the aesthetic preferences of the Empress Eugenie, the Napoleon III style of decorative arts represents a fusion of preceding 18th Century styles. In particular, great importance was placed upon fine furniture craftsmanship and artistry, leading to the revival of highly complex artisanal techniques such as Boulle inlay and Vernis Martin. The Napoleon III style is notable for its decorative quality, with fine ormolu mounts and ornamental porcelain plaques enjoying huge popularity.
