About the Item

A rather unusual and inordinately fine work of the late 19th century, this display cabinet was crafted in two parts with the loose influence of Rococo evident in it’s form and motifs. The surface treatment is positively exceptional, the carver exhibiting an usual breadth of variety in his work. The stepped crest is intricately carved with large foliage displays over a punched grounding flanked by canted corners with raised relief anthemion over scrolled acanthus. The acanthus and anthemion follow through on the corner columns over a repeating scaling and a bold scrolled foliate footing. A single bevelled glass door with inset spandrels of C-scrolls is further embellished with peanut-and-foliate raised carvings at the vertical and horizontal centers of the door. Retaining it’s original single key, the very high quality brass lock opens the door to reveal four glass shelves with an original adjustable brass notched shelving system on the sides and backed by a bevelled mirrored. A rather unusual interpretation of the infinite motif surrounds the frieze of the display cabinet. This upper section is easily lifted off of the lower with two dowels that hold it in place. The lower stand hosts a single broad drawer with dovetailing of inordinate precision with over squared tapering legs with a wealth of foliate carvings locked in place with an X-form stretcher surmounted by an urn finial flanked by scrolls of acanthus. The back of both portions is a testament to the methodical and precise approach the craftsman took in creating the piece - everything is symmetrical, tidy and tight fitting. The corners of the display cabinet are joined in the same long dovetail pins exhibited in the drawers, the frame with exposed tenon mortised joints. A finer and higher quality cabinet is difficult to imagine - a labor of love with an unreal amount of man hours poured into it, this cabinet was obviously carefully enjoyed and remains in pristine condition. Intended for the display of very Fine objects of art, this is a piece that is in every way a statement and a strike point in a classical interior.
