19th Century French Louis Philippe Period Walnut Armoire
About the Item
19th Century French Louis Philippe Period Walnut Armoire is a definitive example of the era, when stately, restrained architecture and furniture design rose to prominence. Perhaps to compensate for a lack of carved or mounted detail, the artisans skillfully hand-selected exquisitely figured wood such as this walnut cut from the joint between a massive branch and trunk. The various cuts were used in an expanded "bookmatch" process yielding reverse images of the fine figure for an intriguing and naturalistic visual effect. The typically bold crown molding presides over the staid casework below, consisting of three panels on each side and also three panels on each door in front. The panels are all affixed using meticulous hand-fitting and secured with pegged mortise & tenon joinery. The restrained base molding and pediment style feet complete the facade in wood, enhanced only by the addition of a brace of finely crafted steel key guards. Doors open to reveal the old original lock works on the inside, as well as three shelves making for four surfaces, with the main shelf fitted with three interior drawers accessed with brass knobs. This particular style remains popular after a century and a half due to its extraordinary compatibility with a wide variety of decors from Old World to contemporary.
