Antique British Wardrobe with Beveled Mirrors by H. Murray and Co.

About the Item

This British armoire is a wonderful piece of history that at some point in it's life traveled from the United Kingdom into the USA. It was made by the British company H. Murray and Co. that was located in Bolton, UK at 29 Knowsley Street. There is a manufacturer's plate inside of the wardrobe (please see photo). We estimate that this piece was made between 1893 and 1895. This is how we identified the date: In 1876 there is an Oliver Murray, general dealer at 29 Knowsley Street in Bolton. By the 1890/91 it has become O. Murray and son, upholsterer. The address is now 30-32 Knowsley Street At some point between 1893 and 1894 it becomes H Murray and Co, upholsterers 30-32 Knowsley Street. In 1895 the houses were renumbered and the address of H Murray and Co changed to 58-60 Knowsley Street. The final entry for the company is in the 1922 directory. The armoire comes apart and consists of two upper, left and right sections, each with beveled mirror and a bottom section with two drawers. The Wardrobe breaks into 4 parts: 1. the bottom part with two drawers: 55" X 20" x 18.5" 2. left cabinet 27.5" x 35" x 18.5" with beveled mirror 3. right cabinet 27.5" x 35" x 18.5" with beveled mirror 4. upper crown 3" x 55" x 18.5" The original locks and handles on the upper doors are missing. They were replaced with the art deco handles (please see the photo).
