Brazilian Modern Hand Painted Bar in Hardwood by G. Scapinelli, 1950s, Brazil
About the Item
Available today, this magnificent Mid-Century Modern, hand painted bar made in Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda, by Giuseppe Scapinelli in the 1950s is truly a masterpiece!
The bar is made in Rosewood and consists of two cabinets, three shelves and two levels resting in four toothpick legs. The top level serves for preparing beverages while the lower one is for storage. The doors feature brass finishes with white formica inside and out. The front section features hand painted tiles that not only are rare in Scapinelli work but adds a touch of sophistication to an already beautiful piece.
There are three things that make this bar so special (and a favorite of mine): DESIGN: Scapinelli’s design staples are all over the bar: Modernist curves with a slim body resting in four toothpicks legs resulting in s masterpiece of levity and elegance.
RARE: A bar designed by Giuseppe Scapinelli with hand painted tiles is extremely rare. While Scapinelli did not paint the tiles himself, he used to collaborate with known sculptors and ceramists to develop one of a kind furniture catered to his affluent Brazilian clientele of the 1950s. Some of these artists were his own brother Francesco Scapinelli, who also was an architect and ceramist (eventually funding the furniture brand Novo Rumo) or his business partner Angelo Taccari, also a ceramist.
WOOD: Brazilian Rosewood (or Jacaranda) at its finest. As the wood gets older, it gets lighter as it dries out and despite its dimensions, the bar is lightweight, though hard and stiff. Extensive logging has virtually eliminated Rosewood from the Brazilian forests, so that today it is not supposed to be logged. The only Material that can be sold legally is old wood, so by owning a vintage piece made of old Jacaranda, you’re not only getting a beautiful collectible but also helping this species to recuperate.
A sculptural piece like this would look awesome by itself, as a piece of art. But it definitely flexes into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, contemporary or boho chic environment also.
Giuseppe Scapinelli was born in 1891 in Modena, Italy, but like many of his Italian fellows, he crossed the ocean and immigrated to Brazil where he started a new life. An accomplished painter, ceramist, and sculptor, he began his career as a furniture designer in the early 1950s.
Scapinelli was both a furniture maker and retailer in 1950s-1960s in São Paulo. His futuristic style is easily recognizable because of the curvy lines and soft shapes, inspired by the Italian design of the 1940s, a departure from the mainstream designs of his fellow retailers. His pieces are beautifully crafted in Brazilian traditional wood. He designed and produced many unique pieces for distinctive São Paulo homes. Scapinelli died in 1982.
