17th Cent. Delft Tile Inset into a 18th Cent. Dutch Side Table with Paint Decor

About the Item

A lovely side table constructed of 17th century Delft tiles, each despicting a celebratory religious szene with stylized floral corners. Each Tile has chips and mars on the edges, but is otherwise in good condition. The paint is somewhat distressed, in keeping with a original paint finish of the 18th Century. The distinctive and historical Delft Tiles are decorated with portraits and pictures of saints and sinners, as well as everyday life. Unlike any other tile traditions, the appeal of Delft lies in their individuality. Almost anything can be represented on a Delft Tile, from mythological depictions of gods to bawdy scenes of sailors and whores. Sandwiched between the port of Rotterdam and the coastal city of The Hague, Delft is a small town now, but in the seventeenth century at the height of the Dutch Golden Age, it was brimming with importance. Around the city the Netherlands at large was reaching the height of its powers, dominating European trade, setting up an outpost in Japan, founding universities and fighting to become a Protestant state against the forces of Catholic Spain. Delft had been the base for William of Orange, the hero of Dutch resistance to Spain. Johannes Vermeer was also born in the city in 1632, spending his life painting its residents and their houses. At the end of the eighteenth century, the production onf 'Delpth Blau' ground to almost nothing, as similar riles could be manufactured more cheaply in Britain.

Wear consistent with age and use. The table as well as the tiles are in good condition, considering the age. The entire top lift's off, and should be packaged with care for shipping, the tiles are so very rare.
