Center-Peace
About the Item
Center-Peace is a handcrafted table created by master artisan, artist and designer Frank Buschmann. This table is directly inspired by the "interior architecture of a tree," as can be seen in the photo of a dead tree trunk taken by Buschmann. The table reflects the way the interior of the tree has been decomposing over time and the union of the branches on the inside has been exposed. This is contrary to the way the eye would normally perceive the branches as "hanging" from the outside, when in fact they are connected in the center where they originate.
Another inspiration for this table is the work of Giuseppe Penone, whose work cannot be explained without the tree and whom Buschmann sees as an "archaeological artist" who excavates the tree layer by layer until he finds its origins. In a more metaphysical way, there are certain connections with Goethe's Faust in his "desperate" search for the essence of life in order to find "inner-peace."
As an anecdotal but useful way of understanding the background to this table-piece, which is in itself wood and tree in a constant process of revelation, Buschmann often tells the story of how the table was made in his workshop in Galicia with a perfectly circular surface measuring 120cm in diameter. After spending a few months in Madrid, where the humidity is drastically different, the top shrunk by just 1cm in width and thus, the perfect circle became an oval, something imperceptible to the naked eye but verifiable when measured. According to the author, it is a detail that illustrates very well the problem of finding "perfection" when working with something that is dynamic. The dynamism of the wood has technical and aesthetic implications.

Frank buschmann
Frank Buschmann (1969-Pinetown, South Africa), artist / craftsman /designer .
Trained as a industrial designer and cabinetmaker. Of German origin, currently living in Galicia, Spain. He spent his childhood in South Africa and Nigeria, his adolescence and education in Germany, where he studied cabinetmaking at the Karlsruhe School of Crafts. In the Netherlands he studied Industrial Design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, where he has been later teaching in the Master "man and humanity". Frank argues that the mastery of a trade is a carrier of tools exemplary for the sustainability of the future. Being a master of a trade is not reduced to the virtuosity of handling some techniques but also supposes a long learning to recognize and cultivate specific attitudes and values. With this approach, Frank intends to recover and maintain the knowledge and practice, not only of the traditional techniques and processes of cabinetmaking, but also its values: patience, intuition and the search for perfection. The virtuous management of techniques goes through the learning of values and attitudes and, all of them, he considers, are universal tools needed to deal with the complexity of the future.
