About the Item
19th century carved parcel-gilt polychrome painted center table in the taste of Ancient Egypt, circa 1867-1870.
The top of the table is an original black Belgian marble top.
Supplied to Khedive Ismail Pacha for his Gezireh palace in Cairo, for the opening of the Suez Canal and commissioning the opera Aida by the composer Verdi .
Until 1998 this table was located in Villa Draneht Pasha in Oggebbio at Lake Maggiore in Italy, when the Peter Zervudachi estate was liquidated. He was Paul Dranehts grandson, the first owner of the villa. During the 19th century, Draneht served under four Egyptian ottoman viceroys, starting with Muhammad Ali Pasha, who patronized him to study medicine in Paris. Paul Draneht became a very loyal servant to all Viceroys and they thanked him for his efforts with titles and properties. His career accelerated under the last viceroy he served, Khedive Ismail Pasha, since he became responsible for raising money to build the Suez channel and the first opera on the african continent in Kairo. Under his authority the world premiere of Guiseppe Verdis opera "Aida" was planned for the grand opening of the Suezchannel, November 1869. Verdi unfortunately couldn't finish the Aida composition at the right time and the following two years, 1870/71, Germany went to war with France. Both Incidents led to a delay in the delivery of the props and costumes, the table even wasn't a part of tis shipping, he got forgotten for a century in a warehouse in Paris.
