Large Shape-Shifting French Baroque Table

About the Item

French gate-leg table, circa 1650. Oak with metal fittings. Measures: Height 28 ¼“ width 54“ depth 20 ½“ / 41 ½“/ 62“ $20,000. This solid oak French Baroque table has two pivoting legs on each side to support hinged leaves. It can do triple duty as a dining table, comfortably seating six, a desk, and a display table. The depth is 54", but the length varies from a 28 1/4" rectangle with leaves hanging, to a 56 1/2" half circle with one leaf raised, to a 62" oval with both leaves raised. Cutlery can be stashed in two long, narrow drawers on each side of the centre section.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Brass drawer pulls are old replacements, and appropriate to period. The two planks of one leaf were reinforced beneath with three short narrow metal plates, painted to match timber.
