Italian Rococo Giltwood Round Center Table, Late 18th Century, Naples, Italy

About the Item

An exquisite, richly gilt Italian carved limewood round center table, late 18th century, probably Naples, Italy. The impressive round center table of a restrained carved Rococo design, with four cabriole legs, a shaped apron, and caved round top. The legs graciously carved with a flowing acanthus leaf design at the foot and an open shell design surrounded by floral sprays at the top. The shaped apron taking cues from the curve and design of the cabriole legs. The shell and floral motif are repeated, and are presented against a carved diaper patterned ground in low relief. The circular top carved with a starburst pattern emerging from an eight point compass rose and surrounded by a quatrefoil shield with fleur-de-lis at the corners. The interior of the shield with a carved basketweave pattern. The edge of the top incised with a laurel wreath pattern and finished with a scalloped edge. The top and edges of the apron and legs water gilded. The gilding with attractive wear, with red highlights form the bole clay showing through. Provenance: Gallerie Steinitz, Paris.

    Refinished. Repaired: Evidence of minor restoration to the apron. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. Some minor nicks around the edges and legs, revealing the white gesso underneath. The table top with wear to the gilding, revealing the red of the bole clay underneath. Evidence of minor restoration to the apron and possible areas of re-gilding.
