About the Item

Renaissance style table in giltwood standing on four short small feet in shape of flattened foliage scrolls. Stand in the style of Roman cartibulum, in French called “fan” table because of the shape of the stand. A crossing adorned with interlaces and rosettes supports a set of 5 baluster shape columns decorated of gadroons and ropes, joined the “fan”, side parts carved in shape of two S shape winged sphinxes back to back, separated by an arcade flanked by two Corinthian columns. Above, the apron is adorned with carved gadroon supporting a rectangular marble tray framed with giltwood sculpted of canals and rosettes. The marble tray is antique green, framed by a small net of yellow marble and a bigger frame in red Levanto marble. Rectangular inlays of red Levanto decorated the middle of the apron on the length direction. On side, inlays are two square red Levanto marble and a rectangular antique green above the arcade. Work realized in the 1900 period. Good condition, compatible with age and use. The French said “Fan” table, sometimes called also “Italian style table”, had a architectural stand typical of the French Renaissance style and was certainly created by Jacques Anrouet du Cerceau in the 16th century. This object is inspired of the Roman cartibulum, a console-table with back to back animals stands. Many artists of the French Fontainebleau School, such as Hugues Sambin, have sublimed many models and this table became a classic of Renaissance table
