"Now We're Laughing" Centre Table by Philip Rae-Scott, England, 2017

About the Item

This unique sculptural coffee table is made from used NOS or laughing gas canisters which were commonly found littering the ground after music festivals and parties. These canisters were originally intended for making whipped cream in restaurants but were commonly used for their dizzying 'high' when inhaled. The used zinc-plated steel canisters for this piece were collected after a music festival near Winchester, England. Because of a recent change in the law, the canisters are now difficult to obtain resulting in this possibly being the last item of furniture to be made by Philip using these materials. Philip Rae-Scott (born in Devon, England 1991) Predominantly a formalist rather than a conceptual artist, Philip’s work tends to be hard-edged, geometric, and solid. Philip is concerned with quality materials, surface finish and longevity. Philip always had a fascination with early machinery and vehicles, honing his making skills working on mechanical projects. Philip’s discovery of art, and transition away from mechanical projects, stemmed from a sharp realisation that he felt it possible to achieve something closer to “perfection” with art. Philip takes inspiration from the making process itself, as well as old machinery and tools, insects, plants, architecture and the landscape. Philip’s work exists in several private collections in England, Geneva and Barcelona, and he has exhibited in a large number of exhibitions in London and Sussex.
