Rare Period Renaissance Stone Table from the South of France

About the Item

This absolutely remarkable and rare stone table from Provence is dated 1570, and from the appearance of the hand-carved motifs, the carving was most likely done by Italians living in France at the time. The stone beneath the hand-cut octagonal tabletop has been left in the rough and its quatrefoil base has hand-carved motifs with very subtle, worn edges. This 16th century table is in a remarkable state of conservation (some later restorations to top and underside including old metal support). There is scrolling rinceau, acanthus leaves and a rectangular framed date of 1570 inscribed at its center. On two sides we see thick muscular lions legs ending in large lion paws, while the other two sides are well detailed columns with Ionic capitals. This magnificent antique French stone table will be a prime focal point wherever it is placed. Average Height=31, W=38 1/4, D=38 3/8

This elegant and beautifully carved wooden center table from France incorporates design elements from two of the most popular French periods. The intricate hand-carved base exhibits aspects of the Rococo style: highly ornamental with asymmetrical carvings, scrolling curves and gilding. Although the wood has since been stripped, the table has a few faint traces of gold remaining in places. The white gesso/paint has been partially left throughout the table base and then glazed over to produce a beautiful and unique finish. This table can also be described as a Louis XIV “table à gibier...

  • Antique Carved French Oak Oval Hunt Table with Boar, Dog, Fox, and Stag, c 1890
    Located in Dallas, TX
A beautiful example of Black Forest style carvings, this hunt table is highlighted by a base adorned with four scrolled leaf legs, each topped by a different animal: boar, dog, stag, and fox (as seen in the main photo, clockwise starting at the lower left). The table was hand-carved from oak in France, circa 1890, with an oval top with rich color and graining. A protruding molding adorned with niches infilled with foliage surmounts a shallow apron with thin molding. Interestingly, there are sections of the infilled niches that are covered by additional leaf tips. Each of the four fantastically carved animal legs are separated by a floret with a vertical orientation. The grouping is topped by a large, bulbous leaf cup, while a noix hangs down below, embellished with fluted crenellation. An onion foot was added beneath each animal, raising the table to a height of 29 ¾ inches. The perfect addition to a game room, study, or living room, our oak oval hunt table...
