1940s Art Deco Coffee Table Attributed to Jean-Charles Moreux

About the Item

A fine Art Deco low coffee table Attributed to Jean-Charles Moreux dating from the 1940s. A pioneer of the Art Deco Neo-Baroque movement, Moreux’s work merges natural and primitive form with playful Surrealist imagery. Known for his use of shell, plaster, exotic woods and the forged iron from which this piece is cast, Moreux has finely crafted a smooth, stepped rectangular top to mount the glass surface, resting this on the bold heads of four pulling horses drawn down into interlocking curved supports and legs that end cleverly in subtle hoofed feet. Horses heads feature as a recurring motif in Moreux’s designs, a similar example of cast iron work can be seen in a floor lamp, illustrated p. 233, Jean-Charles Moreux: Architecte-Décorateur-Paysagiste, by Susan Day, published by Norma Editions, 1999.
