About the Item
This table is made from salvaged limestone and FSC certified oak. The thick wood top sits atop two solid bases, with visible fossilized corals in the stone. Every piece I make is unique. I work with a master woodworker and stonecutter to create each design by hand, unveiling the history and character of the materials.
Dominican limestone is a beautiful stone that is formed in marine zones by geological forces compressing layers of silt, reef and sand over millennia. It typically develops with beautiful lithified corals visible to the naked eye. It is used by many architects and landscape designers in Florida, most of the leftover cuts are waste and end up in the landfill. India searches through surplus from local projects and reclaims the best pieces for this design.
At Shizen Studio, every consideration is made to respect the earth and her inhabitants. Designs are produced by a network of skilled artisans and makers that share a commitment to the environment, local community and quality craftsmanship. Glues are water-based and non-toxic. No VOC finishes are made from botanically derived oils and beeswax. All packing materials are reusable, biodegradable and recyclable. Each design is intended to foster a sense of connection to the natural world.

India Foster
India Foster designs furniture and objects for the home under the moniker Shizen Studio, which she founded in 2020. In Japanese, shizen means nature. Inspired by her subtropical surroundings, she works primarily with timber and stone she has found and reclaimed in Florida. She constructs each piece slowly and intentionally, revealing the personality of the material. Foster then accentuates these intrinsic contours and textures with clean lines and organic shapes. Her distinctive designs encourage people to appreciate the beauty of the natural world in their everyday life. With over 15 years experience as an interior designer, Foster is known for her sophisticated, sustainable style. She takes a holistic view of the built environment, using only carefully sourced materials and transparent fabrication practices. Her projects have been published in Veranda, Elle Decor, Traditional Home and House Beautiful. She holds a bachelor’s degree in History and Literature from Franklin University Switzerland. She is a member of the Female Design Council and the Good Future Design Alliance. Foster is also a passionate conservationist and avid surfer.
