Ceramic Capron Vallauris Orange and Black French Coffetable Ceramic

About the Item

Outstanding pair of rectangular-shaped low tables designed following the spirit and work of Roger Capron in the middle of the last century whose top is made up of ceramic pieces from Vallauris with solar motifs in an intense orange color. The structure of the tables is metallic, in black color and with a very fine profile. The top view could be compared to a painting for its unique design. Roger Capron was a designer especially recognized for his ceramic works. In fact, he was one of the ceramicists who conquered Vallauris and restored prestige and glamor to this town on the Côte d'Azur. These tables are perfect for both indoors and outdoors! Roger Capron (Vincennes, France, 1922 – Cannes, France, 2006) Roger Capron graduated in 1943 from the School of Applied Arts in Paris. In 1952 he founded his own studio, 'l'Atelier Callis', in Vallauris, and rubbed shoulders with artists such as Picasso. His work was soon recognized internationally. His wife, Jacotte, studied art and became a valued collaborator for him. Thanks to his expertise in mixing pigments and glazes, Capron's most famous ceramics feature dazzling colors and whimsical characters. Like Picasso, he experimented with many artistic styles and never stuck to one technique for long. However, their coffee tables with intricate geometric shapes and vibrant colors are also very relevant. With its pleasing palettes and playful arrangements of abstract shapes or patterns from the natural world, this mid-century furniture is both accessible and sophisticated. They are inspired by Scandinavian modernism and illustrate the Parisian ceramist's conviction that beautiful objects should be easily and widely accessible. He wanted to turn ceramics into something popular, within everyone's reach, and he was one of the few artists who went from crafts to industry without losing an ounce of passion. This obsession led him to decorate many public buildings in the south of France, including the Cannes maritime station, for which he created a decorative mural. The Nîmes theater and the luxurious Byblos hotel in Saint-Tropez also hosted his work. Stoneware made him obsessed with designing tables and panels with colored mosaics with an overflowing imagination. His coffee tables, end tables, and accents are among the most enduring and coveted designs of the mid-century modern era. He was awarded at the Milan Triennale in 1954 and the Grand Prix International de la Céramique in 1970. His works have been exhibited at the National Museum of Ceramics and the Magnelli Museum. About Vallauris pottery Vallauris was a pottery center that experienced great growth in the mid-19th century thanks to the arrival of the railway. It ended up consecrating itself as a ceramic focus with the arrival of post-impressionist and modern painters, such as Chagall or Picasso, who sought their source of inspiration in the oriental and primitive. At this time, large factories arose, and with them a true industrial and commercial organization in terms of ceramic production. Since Gallo-Roman times, pottery has stood out in Vallauris thanks to culinary ceramics. Casseroles, pots and jugs have increased the international reputation of Vallauris, especially due to the resistance of this material to high temperatures. Picasso's arrival in the 1950s gave Vallauris the status of the ceramics capital of France, attracting many artists eager to learn the arts of fire. Vallauris ceramics are of the highest quality both in terms of material and design.
