About the Item

Rare modernist coffee table from the 1920s with an extraordinary checkered pattern table top design, which is repeated at the 4 sides of the base. Made from oak and coromandel (veneer). The style is reminiscent of designs by P.E.L. Izeren for De Genneper Molen. It also has similaritiies to designs by H. Wouda for Pander. There are no makers' stamps or marks visible. The style of the table can be classified as Modernist or The Hague School (Haagse School). Many Dutch modernists were influenced by American modernist architects like Frank LLoyd Wright. The tabletop has an inlay of oak veneer and coromandel (macassar) veneer in a geometric mosaic design in squares and rectangles. Along the four sides of the base there are rectangles of coromandel veneer and it stands on four black lacquered (original lacquer and unrestored) solid wooden cubes. Tables like these don't come along very often and are very sought after by collectors of the Dutch modernist styles from the 1920s. It combines very well with other modernist pieces in the same style. Considering age and use this piece is in good condition, professionally (lightly) restored.
