French Maison Jansen Attributed Neoclassical Louis XVI Calacatta Marble Table
About the Item
A extraordinary French mid-century coffee table attributed to renowned Maison Jansen.
Exquisitely handcrafted, finished in Neoclassical Louis XVI taste, blending fine, rare and exotic materials in elegant, luxurious and harmonious ways, featuring a stunning, substantially sized rectangular Calacatta marble top with molded edge giving in a modern vibe, over a rich mahogany wood apron inlaid with satinwood banding and delicate cross-banding, continuing on the single dovetailed frieze drawer front. Having a pair of extending pull-out panels that slide out to give the tabletop more surface area, the tray, work or drink extensions opening to reveal traditional inset gilt-embossed brown leather panels. The cocktail table rises on four solid mahogany wooden tapered fluted legs with bronze collar accents. With its beautiful bright white and bold dramatic dark veining, that only Calacatta marble can offer, it's sure to be an eye catching focal point in any room.
18th century French cabinet makers sought to make great furniture by creating works that blended rare materials in exotic but harmonious ways. Jansen re-affirms this with a modern neoclassical coffee table from the mid-century. Elegant details, luxurious and harmonious. Table expands from 36 to 60" with side panels fully extended.

Overall a wonderful example! Maison Jansen: Maison Jansen (English: House of Jansen) was a Paris-based interior decoration office founded in the late 19th century and is considered the first truly global design firm, serving prominent clients in Europe, Latin America, North America (including the White House, numerous past presidents and celebrities) and the Middle East. In 1880, at the height of the Belle Époque, Jean-Henri Jansen emigrated from Holland to open a furniture shop on the Rue Royale in Paris. No one could have anticipated that his little business (one of the forerunners of interior decoration as we know it) would grow into an Empire, but within Jansen’s lifetime, his emphasis on historical research, his focus on client needs, and his comprehensive approach to transforming space, would earn his firm a faithful client base of wealthy, royal, and otherwise elite clients—clients they would keep for almost a century to come. Maison Jansen was a success from the very start. The shopkeeper made such a splash with his lavish and detailed window displays, and unique approach to selling furniture—Jansen was one of the first dealers to carry everything necessary to furnish a home—that within ten years Maison Jansen was no longer a store but a rapidly expanding design firm with a wealthy and faithful client base. By 1890 Jansen had established a prominent antiques trade, had opened up a workshop on the Rue Pergolese (where the company produced furniture of its own), and had achieved his first great feat of interior decoration—remodeling the Palace of Laeken at the behest of King Leopold II of Belgium. By 1900 Jansen’s reputation was monumental. His firm represented not merely the royalty of Europe, but the wealthy and powerful from all over the world. What’s more, by the turn of the century his furniture was heralded as some of the finest in Europe. The spectacular Art Nouveau writing desk the firm presented at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle remains, to this day, in the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and is considered one of the supreme examples of the period. Maison Jansen would not miss an important show thereafter, and participated in the 1925 Exhibition...Category

- Mid-Century French Louis XVI Nesting Tables Attributed to Maison BaguèsBy Maison Baguès, Maison JansenLocated in Forney, TXA magnificent set of three French mid 20th century gilded brass marble top nesting tables attributed to Maison Baguès for Parisian design firm Maison Jansen. Finished in luxurious Louis XVI taste, each table graduated in size, having a striking dramatically white veined verde green marble oval shaped top, resting on a triangular shaped patinated gilt metal frame in brilliant bronze dore style finish, adorned in foliate relief trim to apron, floral medallions above tripartite stretcher-joined fluted legs, terminating on tapered feet. Dimensions: (approx) Largest: 17.25"H, 24.25"W, 14"D Since its establishment, circa 1860, Maison Baguès has been an emblem of French elegance and sophistication in luxury interior design, originally the finest lighting, expanding into the finest quality furniture and decorative accessories. Each piece the firm makes is hand-assembled using traditional techniques in order to emphasize the elegant excellence of their detailed artisanal work. Still the epitome of savoir-faire, Maison Baguès’ luxurious pieces are prized for their craftsmanship, beauty and harmony. The master metalsmith Noël Baguès founded the company as specialists in liturgical bronzes, but by 1880 the company had expanded into the production of bronze light fixtures in response to the development of electrical lighting. Carried on by Noël’s son Eugène and grandsons Victor and Robert, Maison Baguès continued to progress, adding intricately detailed iron lighting collections in the 1920s as well as stair banisters, gates and accessory tables. Baguès began selling internationally in the interwar period, expanding the company’s operation to New York, Rome and Cairo. Noted for their high-end handcrafted work, such as complex carved sconces and hand-strung crystal chandeliers, Maison Baguès appealed to an elite clientele. While Baguès’ Art Deco crystal lighting fixtures drew the most attention, the company was also known for bespoke metalwork that drew commissions from important interior designers and decorating firms such as Maison Jansen and Raymond Subes. In 1928, eminent bourgeoisie décorateur Armand-Albert Rateau famously used a selection of Maison Baguès accessories to furnish the townhouse interiors of haute couturist Jeanne Lanvin. Beyond Rateau, the atelier was commissioned by many chic interiors icons like Raymond Subes and the legendary decorating firm Maison Jansen. International decoration offices such as Alberto Pinto, Pierre Yves Rochon...Category
