Japanese Orange Red Negoro Lacquer Low Table, Taisho Period, 1920s, Japan

About the Item

A striking orange-red lacquer Japanese low tea or coffee table decorated in the negoro lacquer technique, Taisho period, 1920s, Japan. Of simplistic design, the table has a wonderful profile, great lines and an a wild, bold color combination of mottled orange-red and black. The low table of rectangular shape, supported on four round, chunky recessed feet that splay slightly outward, joined by an "x" stretcher between them. The legs and top of the table worked in orange-red and black negoro lacquer. Negoro lacquer is a Japanese lacquer technique in which various colors of lacquer (in this case black and orange-red) are layered on top of another. Originally, the idea was for the top layer to be worn away gradually, from use, revealing the different colored layer underneath. The patterns created were organic, sometime ethereal, changing with time and use. In more modern times, and in the case of this table, the lacquer is intentionally worn down. The pattern and effect is still striking and enthralling, if somewhat more planned. The black of the under layer contrast beautifully with the orange-red of the top layer.
