Peter Ghyczy Coffee Table Rare Model

About the Item

This is a very rare model coffee table, we contacted Peter Ghyczy, who told us that this table was issued once in 1990 for a large fair, the IMM in Cologne in the early 1990s. At that time 10 tables were made and this is one of them. Therefore, if you are a fan of Ghyczy, this can be a nice addition. Information about Peter Ghyczy. German designer Peter Ghyczy was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1940. After political turmoil, Ghyczy's family fled Budapest in 1956, first to Vienna and then to Bonn in Germany. Ghyczy completed his secondary education in Germany, studied sculpture in Düsseldorf before studying architecture at the Technical University of Aachen in 1960, specializing in structural engineering. He graduated in 1967 and wrote his thesis on unconventional school buildings. During his studies, Ghyczy worked as an assistant to the famous German architect Rudolf Steinbach (1903-1966) and on projects in Paris and Egypt. In 1969 he became a German citizen. After graduating, Ghyczy worked on a large number of designs by furniture makers and factories in Germany, including Vitra. Ghyczy's most successful design during this period was the Garden Egg Chair (1968) for Reuter, which remains one of his most recognizable designs today and is one of the earliest known examples of a hinged chair. The Garden Egg Chair is often referred to as the Senftenberger Ei in German-speaking design circles, named after the East German city where the chair was produced, after the technology to make the polyurethane was sold by Reuter to VEB Synthesewerk. The new location of Ghyczy's Egg production made the chair an icon of East German design in the 1990s. Reuter only worked with plastic as a material and also produced Ghyczy's Easy Chair (1971) and GN2 Lounge Chair (1971). Sometime in the early 1970s, the designer moved to Swalmen in the Netherlands where he founded his own design studio. For his first furniture collection, Ghyczy developed a new way of fixing glass to metal, resulting in a series of coffee tables, side tables and dining tables known as the Pioneer series (1970s). The technique used on the tables has since become Ghyczy's signature and is particularly illustrated by the delicate, floating appearance of the frameless glass, which is secured with a single screw. The R03 Shelf uses the same concept patented by Ghyczy in the early 1970s. In 2008, for the 40th anniversary, Ghyczy redesigned and relaunched the Garden Egg Chair. That same year, the retrospective Cold War Modern: Art and Design in a Divided World, 1945-75, 2008 at the V&A Museum in London, showcased the original chair. Today, Ghyczy's 1970s designs are highly sought after by collectors and fetch high prices in the vintage market.

Peter Ghyczy is one of many designers in the 20th century who were also immigrants - including Henry van de Velde, Marcel Breuer, Hans Gugelot, Peter Maly - and had a major influence on German and international design. In 1968 he took a leading position at the company Elastogran in Lemförde in southern Lower Saxony, where he was responsible for the development of products made of polyurethane. Company owner Gottfried Reuter, a former chemist at Bayer in Leverkusen, was an expert in polyurethane production, for which he held several patents. In the 1960s he formed a group of companies (with a turnover of several hundred million German marks based on these patents). Between 1968 and 1972, Peter Ghyczy developed many innovative designs, identifying him as one of the most prolific designers of these years. In 1970 the Design-Center in Lemförde was inaugurated, built according to the design of Ghyczy, made entirely of polyurethane and the first of its kind. It was one of the early German design studios whose close collaboration between product design and technical development was hitherto unheard of in the plastics industry. By Peter Ghyczy
    Located in Oostrum-Venray, NL
This beautiful coffee table was designed by the Hungarian designer Peter Ghyczy in the 1980s. The table consists of a 30 mm thick glass plate that rests on a stainless steel frame. This frame is made of a continuous square tube of 4 x 4 cm. Both the legs and the resting points on which the table top rests are decorated with gold-coloured details. The resting points are depicted as little monks holding up the table top. The model of the table is T29 and comes from the Biri series, named after Ghyczy's nanny. The entire Biri series stands for sturdy yet graceful design, based on simple geometric shapes. Peter Ghyczy's work as a designer.
