Solar Flare Coffee Table
About the Item
The Solar Flare Coffee Table is inspired by sonification, the process of creating sound from data. Its shape is articulated through sonified audio clips of the sun’s solar flares collected from NASA’s public domain. Hand-cast in Brooklyn, NY. Custom orders available upon request.
For sound to exist, vibrations of atoms and molecules must travel through a medium such as air or water. Since molecules do not exist in the vast regions of the universe, sound cannot travel through deep space. This has not stopped scientists at NASA from using audio clips as a way to recognize subtle differences in how stars travel and how the sun’s magnetic field fluctuates. This procedure, known as sonifcation, is recognized among heliophysicists, astrophysicists, and doctors.
Sonification is used to visualize sound data, such as the beep from a heart rate monitor, a door bell ringing, or in this case, when stars come into contact with a black hole. We converted ‘Sun Sonification’, an audio clip from NASA’s public domain, into a visual soundscape. We then further abstracted ‘Sun Sonification’ by manipulating it into shapes and surface textures for Solar Flare. To listen to ‘Sun Sonification,’ click here.

Studio S II
Studio S II was cofounded by longtime best friends and collaborators, Erica Sellers and Jeremy Silberberg. The two met at a party while pursuing their undergraduate degrees at RISD. Erica holds a BFA in Industrial Design from RISD and has a decade of experience in fine art. Her expertise includes 3D modeling, tech packs and fabrication development, and prototype creation. Jeremy holds a BFA in Film from RISD and an MFA in Interior Design from Pratt. His expertise includes floor plan and program development, spatial visualization, and generating uncommon and custom objects and furniture. Studio S II is an LGBTQ+ owned business whose mission is to build an inclusive atmosphere through engagement and creativity.
The Solar Flare is available in custom pigments, including:
Pink, black, blue, charcoal, resin and sandstone. Other pigments available upon request.
