Turned 19ty Century Wooden Column Encased within Iron Rod X Base Circa 1960s

About the Item

A coffee table or end table depending on what diameter glass top you decide to rest on the base base. The base is an unusual combination of two slices of a 18th or 19th century turned column mounted to a flared iron rod x support which creates an interesting modern table base. The craftsman who made this has a ring of chisel markings around the collars of the columns and across the cut of the base column. This table base reminds me structurally of a Noguchi rocking stool in an odd way. The base is well executed and could support a 3/4" piece of glass probably up to 48" in diameter. It comes with its as found 20" glass top. No restorations in good original condition.

  • 6 Piece Glass Mosaic Tile Coffee Table Genaro Alvarez Cosmic, Mexico, 1950s
    By Genaro Alvarez
    Located in Camden, ME
Six Piece Studio Mosaic table by Genaro Alvarez composed of. Intricate inlaid glass mosaic designs based on 6 zodiac constellations, on six triangular, interchangeable mahogany bases created at the Genaro Alvarez's Studio in Mexico City in the 1950s. Alvarez studied under artists Carlos Ruano Llopis and Diego Rivera. Employing a style he called symbolic expressionism.Alvarez was commissioned to do large murals in Mexico as well as a major commissions in Chicago, Kansas City and other cities in the United States. He did murals in private men's clubs along the the California Coast. This table's mosaic is composed of a variety of glass tile with the most dramatic being silver mirror glass tile outlines of the zodiac and outlines of stars floating within an earth toned background of dark mocha, sienna, ochre, crème and white Terrazzo with traditional Aztec symbols of Navajo red tile with random red tile pieces all add to this sophisticated design work. Each of the six triangular tables is edged in polished brass with brass legs measuring 23.5 by 23.5 by 23.5 inches. I have photographed the table in a variety of configurations and as a stacked grouping. It is intentionally modular, stackable and very versatile in its design. From Don Shoemaker dot com. "One artist that was recognized for his mosaic furniture creations is Genaro Alvarez. The Genaro Alvarez Studio, (located in Mexico City) was known for its mosaic work in murals and floor designs as well as decorative furnishings such as lamps, trays and furniture using various types of natural rocks...
