Carved Giltwood Red Marble-Top Console Table in Louis XV Taste, 19th Century

About the Item

A most vigorous and fluid work from the third quarter of the 19th century, this gorgeous carved giltwood console table is most heavily embellished in the distinctive Louis XV taste, employing the luxurious excesses of Rococo to it’s fullest over every visible surface. The red marble-top beautifully conforms to the demilune turreted form of the table, probably a replacement but an absolutely gorgeous stone. The center of the apron highlights the naturalistic head of a griffin amongst the swirls and twists of foliage and acanthus that dance chaotically across the apron and legs. The deep cabriole of the legs terminates in bold scrolled toes, the legs stretched over an arched stretcher that originally raised a carved element at the center. Joinery throughout the table is permanent and excellent, the back of the frame locking into the apron with large dovetails at the corners, the stretchers doing likewise into the backs of the rear legs. A most fine statement piece, this is a rich and handsomely preserved console that will make a difference in a well decorated interior. Measurements: 36 3/4” H x 49” W x 23” D. Condition report: Marble-top is probably replaced, having some light surface scuffs and chipping along the back edge. Extensive gilt loss/chipping, large molding loss to left side of left leg, missing element at center of stretcher, old joint separations.
