Extraordinary Pair of Italian 18th Century Carved Gilt-Wood Console Tables

About the Item

A very fine and important pair of Italian carved gilt-wood console tables, Roman, circa 1770 Each with a rectangular back, yellow and white marble top, above a frieze centered by a roundel, one with a recumbent male figure the other with a female figure in drapery, amongst birds and scrolling foliage, with an acanthus leaf clasp at each corner, on leaf-carved stop-fluted legs joined by an X-form stretcher centered by a wicker basket of fruit and flowers; Provenance from a historic Roman Palace Measures: 92cm high, 180cm wide, 86cm deep; 3ft. Nin., 5ft. 11in., 2ft. 10in. The frieze decoration and carving is reminiscent of a pair of console tables in the Quirinale, Rome (see Alvar Gonzalez-Palacios, I Mobili Italiani, Milan, 1996, pp.184-185, no.59). Also typical of Roman furniture are the bulbous knees on the feet and the carved wood wicker basket on the stretcher (see Goffredo Lizzani, Il Mobile Romano, Milan, 1970, p. XXXIV, no. LXX).

  • Baroque Gilt Wood Console Table, Southern Germany 18th Century
    Located in Belmont, MA
This original 18th century Baroque console table stands out for its finely carved gilt wood details. It is the perfect little eye catcher for a smaller entryway. If you are looking for an eclectic mix of antique and new, you could easily add a contemporary painting or mirror above it, This exquisite little console table derives from Southern Germany. It shows the typical features of the 17th-18th century baroque design vocabulary. Consequently acanthus leaves and scrollwork embellish its otherwise symmetrical structure. It comes in original condition with the expected wear and tear and some retouches from earlier restorations and measures H 29.53 x W 25.99 x D 13.78 inches (H 75 cm x W 66 cm x D 35 cm). During the 17th century, the Baroque style had a marked effect upon furniture design throughout western Europe. Large wardrobes, cupboards, and cabinets had twisted columns, broken pediments, and heavy moldings. The Baroque style was adopted in the Low Countries in the 1620s and extended late into the 17th century, when Germany and England began to develop it. In southern Germany the French influence on furniture design was more prominent than in the western or northern parts, where Dutch and English styles were predominant. The big centers for the production of south German Baroque furniture...
