An antique French Henri II pale oak console table with the original marble top circa 1880. This handsome console/serving table is a unique piece of Henri II Revival furniture form the late nineteenth century in France that has been updated for a more contemporary impact. Originally the finish would have been a dark oak which made the handsome carved details extremely difficult to see. Now the oak has been taken back to its original pale colour and this shift means the highly dramatic carving is far more visible. The table is quite shallow and because the carved details appear on the front as well as both sides it was crafted to be seen from all directions when placed against a wall. Looking at the table the sense of balance and symmetry is immediately apparent. The original marble top extends slightly wider and deeper than the table and gives a suitable visual balance to the entire piece. The front has an apron that contains a pair of drawers set side by side that each retain their original cast brass drop pull with a colour that contrasts nicely with the pale oak. Each drawer has a wonderful array of deep relief carving in an organic scrolled design that flank the central medallion where the drop pull is placed. In between the drawers and on the left and right side of the apron are rectangular panels again of deep relief carving but these are symmetrical in design and resemble stylized flower blossoms. Above and below the drawers is a horizontal band of moulding that not only extends across the front but also across the sides as well to continue the sense of visual continuity. Each side also has a recessed horizontal panel framed by the top and bottom moulding that gives the sides further dimension. The three columns beneath the shelves are equally spaced and have a pleasing tapered shape. While the front columns are fully turned and freestanding the back of the table features a pair of half columns placed on the left and right that mirror the front columns. Please notice the beautifully carved capital on each of the columns and the way they relate to the carving on the drawer fronts. The sides of the column shaft remain smooth until they reach the bottom where they are each enhanced with a carved depiction of climbing vines that encircle the entire column. The base of each column consists of three concentric rings that repeat the tapered effect as they come to rest on the lower shelf. Curiously these three carvings at the base of the front columns are all different and presage the movement toward the entirely asymmetrical and organic design of the Art Nouveau style. The two half columns at the back frame the back panel of the table which is divided into two sections. Each section has a pattern of scrolls that are balanced and each is centred on a floral medallion similar to the medallion that that frames the drawer hardware. The lower shelf is perfectly flat and was used to display beautiful objects if desired or left clear in order to see all of the details of the table. The band of large moulding that extends beneath the lower shelf extends across the entire front and sides. Please note that the direction of the moulding is determined by the side it is on and begins in the exact centre of the base. The table is elevated slightly on compressed spheres that impart an elegant lift. The delightful combination of carving, colour and materials create a table with exceptional presence that ensures its nature as a focal point in an interior.
