Pair of 18th Century English Ball and Claw Console Tables with Marble Tops

About the Item

This handsome pair of English ball and claw console tables, from the 1700’s, are fitted with shaped, green marble tops. The cabriole legs with feet that resemble a claw grasping a ball was a design element that was highly popular in the middle of the 18th century in England (Thomas Chippendale). The tables are made from a wonderful natural colored wood with a faint hint of parcel whitewash. The front of each table has been recently retrofitted to allow the facades to open as drawers. The highly shaped jade marble tops have darker green inclusions and white veining, offering a beautiful contrast to the lightly colored wood. Beneath the cavetto molding of each top is four cabriole legs that terminate in a ball and claw foot. There is a large, sinuous leaf embellishing the top convex bend of each leg. The aprons on the sides and fronts have been carved in a sinuous fashion with a thin layer of molding. Additional elements adorn the front façade, with a large, scalloped shell and foliate rinceaux above a pair of facing volutes. Our pair of 18th century ball and claw consoles are versatile tables that can be used with a variety of interior styles. Place them against a wall, flanking an item such as a sofa or mantel, for a pair of grand statement pieces.

  • Early 18th Century Painted Italian Console Table with Rouge Royal Marble Top
    Located in Dallas, TX
Console tables are beautiful, graceful tables that also serve a practical purpose. These tables are aligned against a wall, often between two windows and/or placed beneath a mirror. You might find accessories or artwork resting on the marble or wooden tops. During the Regence period, these tables would often be painted to match the colors of the wood paneling of the walls, indicating that this console table came from an opulent room. Hand-carved in Italy during the 1700’s, the wood has a lacquered white finish with gilded highlights. The rouge royal marble from Belgium has white and gray veining and light inclusions with a quarter round finish on three sides (like most consoles, the backside is typically left unpainted or raw – as this is the side that abuts the wall). Beneath the thick marble are four cabriole legs with pied-de-biche (deer’s foot...
