Pair of George III Polychrome-Decorated Satinwood Console Tables

About the Item

A pair of George III Polychrome-decorated satinwood console tables. In the manner of Seddon, Sons and Shackleton. Each with a rectangular top with rounded front corners and painted with a border of ribbon-entwined foliate garlands. The panelled apron centred to the front with a neoclassical urn. On square tapering legs. England, Circa 1800 The painted decoration on shimmering satinwood veneers make these side tables attributable to Messrs. Seddon, Sons and Shackleton of Aldersgate Street. This rare pair of console tables are provenanced to the collection of Robert William Hudson (1856–1937) who made his money in soap-flakes and by then selling his business to Lever Brothers in about 1908. Hudson built a house called 'Bidston Court' on Bidston Hill in Birkenhead and in 1899 the Neo-Gothic Stanhope House at 46-47 Park Lane, London. He also bought the then-named Villa Coquette in 1925 and it was his second wife, Beatrice Sabina, nee Gaudengio (d. 1950), whom he married in 1932, who renamed the house as the Villa Paloma. The Villa now serves as the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco. Regarding Hudson's furniture collection, it is known that he favoured the Sheraton style. His prize possession was the only piece of furniture known to have been designed by Sheraton himself - the celebrated Broadwood grand piano, inset with Wedgwood plaques, made for Don Manuel de Godoy and presented to the Queen of Spain. It is now in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Liverpool. An illustration by Edwin Foley in 1910 of the Queen of Spain's piano in the drawing room of Hudson's home on Park Lane also shows a satinwood chest and pair of armchairs, which are in the same vein as these fine console tables. Provenance: Robert William Hudson (1856–1937). Villa Paloma, Monaco.
