1960s Ole Wanscher Mahogany Desk

About the Item

Mahogany desk designed by Ole Wanscher in an excellent restored condition. Denmark, 1960s This desk was designed following the mid century design rule and aesthetic, using noble woods in a precise and free of excessive decorative elements. However, the designer is attentive to detail and no element has been placed fortuitously. The direction of the wood grain is precise, the wooden moulding outlines the silhouette and the drawers stick out a little creating a gracious volumetry on the front. The back of the desk, that is usually displayed, is finished in the same quality mahogany wood. Ole Wanscher was a key player in Denmark's midcentury modern movement. In the postwar era, the simple and refined aesthetic he achieved by reinventing classic forms helped define Scandinavian design, and many of his pieces became staples in Scandinavian homes.
