French 19th Century Louis XVI Style Mahogany and Ormolu Mounted Desk by Grimard

About the Item

A very fine French 19th century Louis XVI style mahogany and ormolu-mounted writing table by G. Grimard "Meubles d'Art" 5 rue de Charonne, Paris. After a model by Adam Weisweiler (French, 1744-1820). The single drawer desk with a green felt top with a gilt trim, surmounted with finely chased gilt bronze mounts with swags, tassels, musical instruments, a frieze with figures of goats, a Bacchanalian mask flanked by cornucopia and neoclassical allegorical plaques depicting playful cherubs amongst clouds with flowers and musical instruments. Engraved brass plaque on the drawer reads "Grimard - Meubles d'Art - R, de Charonne, 5 - Paris". Circa: Paris, 1880. G. Grimard is recorded to have produced Fine 'Meubles d'Art' at 5 rue de Charonne in Paris in the second half of the nineteenth century. Grimard exhibited at many international fairs and exhibitions. Known for high quality furnishing, mainly in the Louis XVI and Neoclassical style, with finely chased ormolu mounts, his pieces rarely come up for sale and most remain in private collections. Like many of the other renown Parisian cabinet makers from the 19th century, Grimard's furnishings were exported to high-end markets and clients all-over the world.     Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. A truly beautiful and great quality desk or writing table. All gilt is original and very finely chased. Some minor nicks and scratches on the mahogany body, the original felt top with some fading. See all images.

    A very fine and large French 19th century Louis XV style ormolu-mounted mahogany and kingwood three-drawer bureau plat attributed to Paul Sormani (French-Italian 1817-1877). The shaped rectangular top enclosing a gilt tooled brown leather writing surface within a molded border above a long central drawer enclosing a fine modeled mask of Hercules wearing the Nemean lion pelt centered by flat cast encadrements and rosewood veneered a quatre faces flanked by two short drawers with reticulated escutcheons of scantly clad frolicking putti and doves over gadrooned "C" scrolls, trellis patterned panels on a stylized shell within similarly framed encadrements raised on elegant cabriole legs surmounted by bearded satyr masks ending in acanthus case hairy paw feet beneath sides centering bacchic masks. Lock mechanism stamped W S M, 6068, a key (lacking skeleton key), and 148. Veuve Paul Sormani Et Fils was the widow of the highly esteemed furniture maker Paul Sormani (French-Italian 1817-1877). After his death around 1877 she and her son took over the management of the company continuing the tradition of producing fine French furniture of the highest calibre. An escutcheon and several mounts were examined on the reverse, and each was found to have the bronze master model initials "SJ:. Blue chalk inscription on underside Glle 117, Paris, circa 1880.     A wonderful mid-19th century French Louis XVI style mahogany desk hand-crafted in France circa 1850. A beautiful, smooth top of flame mahogany is surrounded by a three quarter decorative brass gallery following down to two open center storage spaces and four roomy drawers in a removable riser. This top piece easily lifts off the base for transport and is affixed with circular, recessed brass escutcheon plates surrounded by Louis XVI style brass bellflower pulls. A second three quarter brass gallery surrounds the writing surface which measures 30” H and is adorned with new black leather with gold gilt tooling. Two sliders on each side of the writing surface are covered with the original leather and extend the desk out 17 ¾” on either side. The apron showcases the handsome veneer and gorgeous colors of the wood and contains four drawers of the same design that open easily. The right side has a singular large drawer that opens to contain a notched wooden privacy slide and a four compartment pull out wooden tray for excellent organization. The whole is raised on regal turned, tapering fluted legs with brass capitals and capped feet. Showcasing an attractive polished mahogany, this desk has fine features, many storage options, and is fully finished on all sides making it a supremely practical piece.
