Late 19th Century English Carved Oak Green Man Bureau Desk

About the Item

An antique English carved golden oak green man bureau/desk, circa 1890. The bureau has a wonderful rich golden colour and has been sympathetically re-finished by hand in a shellac sealer. It has a smooth waxed finish, but still retains a few light authentic marks to highlight its genuine heritage. Made in solid oak with hand carved green man pull handles and sinuous carved decoration, standing on a shaped all round plinth. Inside features a pigeon hole interior with two drawers and a leather and gilt tooled inset. There are loopers on the sides to hold the drop safely and sturdily in situ. The leather and gilt inset has been replaced at some point, it is slightly raised on a couple of edges, but this has no movement to it. The drawers have solid oak sides and backs with handmade dovetail construction. They all work well and are clean on the insides. The key works the lid well. There is also a separate key for the cupboard. The cupboard has a removeable oak faced stained pine shelf. The back panel is in stained pine, this had a hole in the back, which has been plugged. Please refer to the last photograph. Additional dimensions information: The drop is 73cm high. There is 70cm in height from the floor to the underside of the drop. There is is 79cm width between the loopers.
