About the Item

The root table is a celebration of the beauty of a naturally formed wood slab, elevated by a lustrous bronze sculpture base. The bronze table base is identical from piece to piece, being cast from our own molds. The tabletop, however, will carry its own unique beauty and identity. Each slab will vary not only in shape and thickness, but also possibly in wood species. The table shown is a slab from Cork Oak. We also commonly use California walnut (Claro Walnut), big leaf maple burl and other beautifully figured options. Please contact us regarding the requirements for your table top and we will find the best slab to make each piece a fine work of art. Each base is individually cast by skilled bronze artisans using the ancient process of lost wax casting. This is the same technique used for thousands of years to produce priceless sculptures and other works of art. It involves the pouring of molten bronze into ceramic moulds which are formed from wax versions of an original pattern. Once the bronze has cooled, the molds are broken from the bronze parts and then the bronze is laboriously chased to a liquidy polish. The slabs are hand planed, scraped, sanded, clarified and finished entirely by our skilled craftsmen. They work precisely to accentuate all of the unique characteristics as well as stabilize and smooth the top, to produce a beautiful finished satin surface, suitable for the finest of uses, including writing or dining, or display. Slab tops are one of a kind and unique in their detail, often including cracks, checks, knots, unique colorings, patterns, or other marks that are naturally occurring in the wood. These areas are not to be considered defects, but special to each slab's personality. Pieces are selected to range between 2 to 3 inches thick, depending on the specimen.
