Antique Queen Anne Style Dining Table and Eight Chairs, circa 1920

About the Item

This is a fabulous antique burr walnut dining set, comprising a burr walnut dining table, circa 1920 in date and eight vintage burr walnut dining chairs, all in the Queen Anne style. The table is of oval shape with line inlaid decoration. It has it's original winding mechanism with winding handle and has three leaves which can be added or removed as required. The knees of the cabriole legs have been carved with shells and bellflower ornaments, the legs terminate in ball and claw feet, and these carved decorations have been beautifully gilded. The table has been French polished to revive it and bring out the beautiful grain of the burr walnut. The matching set of eight chairs comprises six side chairs and a pair of armchairs. They were bought by the last owner of the table in the 1990s, they were masterfully hand carved to match the table and we have reupholstered them in a beautiful fuchsia velvet. It is a beautiful set which is sure to receive a lot of attention during your dinner parties. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produces some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find. Walnut The Walnut woods are probably the most recognisable and popular of all the exotic woods, having been used in furniture making for many centuries. Walnut veneer was highly priced and the cost would reflect the ‘fanciness’ of the veneer – the more decorative, then the more expensive and desirable. Winding Mechanism for extending tables A man by the name of Samuel Hawkins applied for a patent on a screw expander on June 6th, 1861. Presumably, Mr. Hawkins either died or retired because his business was taken over by a young machinist named Joseph Fitter in 1864. Joseph Fitter operated a machinist shop where he produced winding mechanisms for extending tables as well as screw expanders for piano stools and other applications at 210 Cheapside, Birmingham England by the name of Britannia Works.
