About the Item

This is a beautiful antique dining set comprising an antique Victorian mahogany dining table, circa 1860 in date and a set of ten English tulip back dining chairs. This amazing table has two original leaves and can sit ten people in comfort. This striking table has been handcrafted from solid flame mahogany which has a beautiful grain and is in really excellent condition. The two leaves can be added or removed as required to suit the occasion by a special winding mechanism and can be easily removed and stored away when not required. The table is raised on four beautiful cabriole legs which have been masterfully hand-carved and terminate in their original brass and porcelain castors, which makes it easy to move when required. The set of ten tulip back dining chairs compliment the table perfectly and comprises eight side chairs and a pair of armchairs. These chairs have been masterfully crafted in beautiful solid mahogany. They have carved back rails, drop-in seats with elegant olive green alkantara upholstery and stand on stylish turned and reeded legs. Whatever the function of this gorgeous set, it will make a profound impression on your dinner guests and will receive the maximum amount of attention wherever it is placed. Dimensions in inches: Height 2 feet, 6 inches x width 7 feet, 8 inches x depth 3 feet, 10 inches - when fully extended. Height 2 feet, 6 inches x width 4 feet, 7 inches x depth 3 feet, 10 inches - when closed. Height 3 feet, 2 inches x width 2 feet x depth 2 feet - chairs. Height 3 feet, 2 inches x width 2 feet x depth 2 feet - armchairs. Flame mahogany Thomas Sheraton, 18th century Furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Winding mechanism for extending tables A man by the name of Samuel Hawkins applied for a patent on a screw expander on June 6th, 1861. Presumably, Mr. Hawkins either died or retired because his business was taken over by a young machinist named Joseph Fitter in 1864. Joseph Fitter operated a machinist shop where he produced winding mechanisms for extending tables as well as screw expanders for piano stools and other applications at 210 Cheapside, Birmingham England by the name of Britannia Works.
