Empire Style Oval French Extending Dining Table.

About the Item

We kindly suggest that you read the entire description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our objects. This fascinating and refined French dining table; an oval top is supported by four legs with a round cross-section and slightly wider in the middle, the top and bottom all have brass empire decoration, and they are connected by a massive curved X-shaped frame. The table can be lengthened to a maximum size of cm.240 with two extensions (it can also be opened with only one extension); the extension tops are missing however we can tell you the cost of execution by providing them, or you can easily make them ( or have them made) yourself. The most compelling thing about this table is the wood from which it was made: sapele. The oval top has undergone a unique and special processing done completely by hand that includes meticulous flattening and a special polishing done in 12 passes with a cotton pad soaked in shellac and straw oil with pumice stone powder, these techniques have allowed us to enhance the colors and flaming of the Sapele wood giving our table a unique and exclusive elegance and refinement. Sapele (or Sapelli or Sapeli), is a species of fine wood with a reddish hue native to West Africa., has characteristics similar to mahogany and in some applications even better than mahogany itself; it is a strong, hard, compact, and rather flexible wood; also because of the attractive appearance it is used as a substitute for mahogany for high-quality furniture, such as cabinets, tables, chairs and chests of drawers, for fine cabinet-making work, for making musical instruments and for furnishing luxury boats. Sapele is characterized by shades ranging from red to dark brown, often with darker veins and black stripes. Its texture is uniform and has a lustrous appearance. In addition, sapele is known for its strength and hardness. It has good impact resistance and durability, making it suitable for furniture and objects subject to mechanical stress. The table was created between 1910 and 1915 in a cabinetmaking workshop in Le Havre, a city on France's northern coast. Le Havre was an important port and furniture manufacturing center during the early 20th century. Furniture factories in Le Havre produced a wide range of styles, from classical to more modern influences with an emphasis on working with fine woods. The cabinetmakers who worked on this table, giving it small dimensions but with clever solutions of functionality of use, managed to create an extraordinary, sought-after, and compelling piece of furniture, which by its extreme elegance and its soft line make it extremely versatile and easily placed in any environment. The table is in good condition. Measures width cm.144, depth cm.120, height cm.76, height for the seat cm.66, maximum opening size cm.240. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (custom-made wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.

  • Provencal Style French Extending Table
    Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest that you read the whole description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our items. French extending table in Provencal style made of oak wood; the top has a precious "parqueterie Versailles" workmanship, this name because the design of the decoration was made on the model of a floor of the Palace of Versailles; the underneath and the legs are ebonized wood with some light carving; the legs are "cabriole "that is, a design shaped in two curves, the upper one convex and the lower one concave; a shape known to the ancient Chinese and Greeks, which came back into fashion in Europe at the end of the 17th century, when it was incorporated into the more curvilinear styles introduced in England, France and Holland; with this type of leg, the design becomes very pleasing, well-proportioned and elegant. The term parquet is of French origin and seems to have originated in the 1600s, a time when wooden floors were at their most popular. The word parquet comes from the technique of marqueterie or parqueterie i.e., inlay applied to fine furniture. The table extends easily, the two extensions, originally, slide out from under the top and fit with the top itself in a perfect and aesthetically pleasing manner. This work of art was created by a true master cabinetmaker in a perfect and meticulous manner in France between 1910 and 1915 in an artisan workshop in the artisan area of Bru, in the department of Vosges in the Grand Est Region. The style is typically Provençal, but the finishing of the top and the choice to create a pleasant contrast, using black for the part underneath, give it a strong aesthetic and make it much more elegant and refined than Provençal furniture...
