18th Century Georgian Mahogany Pembroke Table

About the Item

A very good quality late 18th century, Georgian Sheraton period, mahogany Pembroke table, having well figured two flap top with inlaid strung decoration, over one frieze drawer, opposed by false drawer to reverse, raised on elegant square tapered legs, terminating with original brass castors. Pembroke tables became one of the most popular pieces of furniture around the mid 18th century due to their versatility and plethora of different uses. In fact George Hepplewhite himself actually described Pembroke tables as the most useful of tables and many references can be found to them in the literature of the time with people such as Jane Austen even describing them being used for dining at, or having papers kept in them for use as a writing table. There is even references to them in other literature as tables which ladies used for taking part in embroidery at. It is certain that they are incredibly versatile even in todays world and can be used for many, many different purposes. The ability to use the two flaps to create a significant variation in the size of the table top surface is an incredibly useful and functional feature. This particular pembroke table is stylistically typical of the late 18th century design, with the elegant square tapering legs. The timbers used are of a high grade and the overall construction is certainly very good, hence it has survived with very little damage of consequence. We think it would be the perfect, useful, functional and elegant addition to any home.
