About the Item

This is an important antique French marquetry card table, circa 1890 in date. The craftsmanship and finish are second to none and the table is made from rosewood, mahogany and satinwood and features exquisite floral marquetry decoration. The card table opens to reveal a beautiful red baize lined interior which is perfect for playing cards. It has a useful drawer to store cards, pens and paper and the linings of the drawer are incredibly made from solid bird's-eye maple, a sure sign of quality. The underside of the drawer and the card table are stamped with the name of the renowned maker, Maison Jeanselme & Godin CH Jeanselme & Co 7 & 8 Rue des Arquebusiers, Paris And the inventory number 6962. It stands on four barley twist legs that are united by cross stretchers and terminate in small elegant bun feet. Add a touch of class to your home with this unique piece. Maison Jeanselme. was an important family of cabinetmakers active from 1824 to 1930, they were suppliers of furniture to Louis Philippe and Napoleon III. The firm of Jeanselme was established by Charles-Joseph-Marie Jeanselme at 7 & 9, rue Harlay , Paris in 1824. The firm, Jeanselme Fils et Godin et Cie, passed into the direction of Auguste Godin in 1871 , on the retirement of the founder and was known under the name of A. Godin et Cie until 1883. It remained at the same location, but rue Harlay was renamed rue des Arquebusiers in 1879. Godin died in 1883 and the son of the founder, Charles-Henri Jeanselme (b. 1 856) continued the business under the name of Ch. Jeanselme et Cie until it ceased in 1930. Marquetry. is decorative artistry where pieces of material (such as wood, mother-of-pearl, pewter, brass silver or shell) of different colours are inserted into surface wood veneer to form intricate patterns such as scrolls or flowers. The technique of veneered marquetry had its inspiration in 16th century Florence. Marquetry elaborated upon Florentine techniques of inlaying solid marble slabs with designs formed of fitted marbles, jaspers and semi-precious stones. This work, called opere di commessi, has medieval parallels in Central Italian "Cosmati"-work of inlaid marble floors, altars and columns. The technique is known in English as Pietra Dura, for the "hardstones" used: onyx, jasper, cornelian, lapis lazuli and colored marbles. In Florence, the Chapel of the Medici at San Lorenzo is completely covered in a colored marble facing using this demanding jig-sawn technique. Techniques of wood marquetry were developed in Antwerp and other Flemish centers of luxury cabinet-making during the early 16th century. The Craft was imported full-blown to France after the mid-17th century, to create furniture of unprecedented luxury being made at the royal manufactory of the Gobelins, charged with providing furnishings to decorate Versailles and the other royal residences of Louis XIV. Early masters of French marquetry were the Fleming Pierre Golle and his son-in-law, André-Charles Boulle, who founded a dynasty of royal and Parisian cabinet-makers (ébénistes) and gave his name to a technique of marquetry employing shell and brass with pewter in arabesque or intricately foliate designs. Bird's-eye maple. occurs primarily in Sugar Maple and is a very hard wood with divergent grain structure caused by the presence of the birds-eyes. In the days when all furniture was made essentially by hand, bird's-eye Maple was used by only the most capable cabinetmakers. These artisans had developed the tools and skills to work and finish bird's-eye maple successfully. Antique furniture made out of bird's-eye maple is rare and beautiful. The divergent grain that makes bird's-eye maple beautiful also makes it difficult to work. Early woodworking machines ran at low rpms and had only two knives per cutterhead. This often produced bird's-eye surfaces that were chipped and torn. It took many hours of hand planing and scraping to get these surfaces to a high sheen. This limited the use of bird's-eye maple to projects whose value could justify the extra labour cost. Examples of this are Fine furniture and musical instruments. Our reference: 07303.
