French Louis XV Period Tric Trac or Backgammon Table Stamped P. Roussel

About the Item

French Louis XV period (18th century) "Tric Trac" or Backgammon table stamped by the maker, "P. Roussel," and the guild "JME" (Jurande des Menuisiers et Ebenistes --translated as the Guild of Joiners and Cabinet makers). The table has a separate, lift-off top, covered in embossed leather on one side for use as a desk, and green baize on the other side for card playing, and has four drawers. The "diamond point" marquetry is bois de rose (tulipwood), with bois de violette (kingwood) and palissander accents over an oak structure. The table has been beautifully restored with French polish. The desk includes two silvered-bronze candle holders, 31 checkers (16 white and 15 stained green), two leather dice cups, and a pair of dice. The backgammon surface appears to be ebony, with inlaid points. Nicely-cast gilt bronze pulls and sabots. The dimensions provided below are for the table without the cover. The cover adds about 1" to each dimension. The ebeniste, Pierre Roussel (b. 1723, d. 1782) became a master on the 21st August 1745. His pieces are found in many museums and private collections including the Louvre, the Musée Carnavalet, the Metropolitan Museum of New York and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
