Rare Louis XVI style game table with wood marquetry decoration
About the Item
Louis XVI style game table with its stopper made of veneer inlaid with different species. In the upper part, it is flanked by two drawers and two flaps in wood veneer with geometric marquetry called "straw", each separated by gilded bronzes with candelabra motifs and opening with circular handles topped with fleurons. The top is covered with a brown leather. This remarkable hot water bottle table still has its modular stopper presenting on one side a chess grid and on the other, a tea scene featuring a woman petting her dog, a maid serving her tea and a man taken by his reading, all in a decor marked by the Louis XVI style. Each detail is sublimated by a clever use of different cuts of wood (burr, end wood, quarter...) and stained wood. The set rests on four tapered legs finished with gilded bronze sabots.

"TABLE BOUILLOTTE"
The name comes from the game "la bouillotte", a form of poker from the end of the 18th century. These tables with reduced dimensions are light, round and have drawers in belt; sometimes a stopper was added in order to play various games (cards, chess...). Today, it is rare to find game tables with their stopper.
