  • 17th Century Spanish Walnut Wood Table with Single Plank Top
    Located in Dallas, TX
A beautifully crafted wooden table from Spain, the walnut was hand-carved at the end of the Renaissance (in the 1600’s). As is the case with most Spanish Renaissance tables, the 1 ½” thick single plank top rests upon tightly turned legs. The edges of the top do not have molding or carvings but receive added character from the large dovetail grooves that were used to construct the table. This table has framing beneath the top plank which houses three horizontally aligned drawers. Each drawer façade has an iron escutcheon in the shape of shield with two engrailed top edges. The keyplate is set within a foliate margent that is surrounded by several layers of molding. Identical carvings and iron plates can be seen on the opposite side of the table, which has faux drawer fronts. Beneath the belt are four turned legs connected by an H-stretcher. Our 17th century Spanish walnut table...

  • 18th Century English Carved Pine Lion Table Lamp
    Located in Dallas, TX
The lion has been a symbol of England since the late 12th century, when King Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) adopted the animal for his first Great Seal. This lion was carved out of pine in England during the 1700’s and has since been repurposed into a table lamp. Wired for use in American homes, the lamp has been paired with a 20 1/8-inch diameter cream shade. The rampant lion is leaning on a scrolled shield with a bend dexter and fields of squares and roundels. A rectangular plinth with several layers of thin molding provides a stable base for the lamp. Our 18th century pine lion table lamp...

  • 18th Century Italian Walnut Wood Pulpit Canopy
    Located in Dallas, TX
This large and attractive architectural piece is known as a pulpit canopy. Before the advent of microphones and speakers, orators would often address assemblies from elevated platforms known as “wine glass pulpits”. These podiums featured domed roofs called abat-voix, sometimes known as sounding boards, that would project sound outwards. Our walnut wood pulpit canopy is a fine example of such a device. Hand-carved and hand-painted in Italy in the 1700’s, our abat-voix is roughly octagonal in shape. Each of the sides have edges with luxuriously thick step molding, alternating between stained and gilded wood. Each of the corner cornices are adorned with gilded flower carvings, although some are missing. The interior of the canopy features a gilded open sun with sinuous rays emanating all around. Each of the sides are adorned with foliate margents surrounded by scrolls, again with some losses. All the edges are bordered with a thin layer of gilding. Although our fascinating 18th century Italian walnut pulpit canopy was designed for a church pulpit...
