18th Century Dutch Oak Side Table

About the Item

Rectangular side table built using oak and pegged construction in the late 1700s in the Netherlands. This table shows beautiful craftsmanship and proportions. The top features an inset panel attached to the base with rose-head nails, and sits on a single drawer inset in the flat apron. The corners of the apron are adorned by beautifully hand-carved fluting. The apron sits on turned legs connected with a box stretcher also embellished with fluted corners matching the top and completing the table in a very balanced and harmonious way. The table sits on its original bun feet. Overall this is a beautiful side table that, although very solid, does not look heavy. Its size, proportions and decorations make it a perfect piece that can fit with any style and in any room.

  • 18th Century Italian Oak Box / Chest
    Located in Carmine, TX
Small chest hand-made in Italy in the early 1700s using oak. This little guy is just the right combination of rustic, cute and old. Its small size make it a perfect piece for many different purposes: sofa side table, entryway accent piece, bedroom hiding spot for anything that does not have an officially assigned drawer in the house (what my mom used to call the cabinet of horrors when I was a teenager). Overall the chest or cassettina has a simple and rustic appearance. The hinges and rose-headed nails are still original, as well as the paw feet. The front of the case is decorated by two chamfered panels framed in round molding. Despite being very straight-lined the piece looks anything but flat because of all the little dents, chips, scratches and irregularities accumulated over hundreds of years of use, and this is really the best feature of this tiny gem, the patina is fantastic and one can see that this little guy had a long life, but it is still game...

The buffet features 3 drawers over three doors, all decorated with beautiful carving and raised panels throughout. The drawers show beautiful hand-made dovetailed joints and the back itself is a work of art. The buffet is still sitting on its original carved feet and shows a scalloped and carved apron, and is finished with simple, original hardware. This piece was hand-selected because of its beautiful proportions, carvings and overall color. The bleaching process shows much of the natural grain of the wood but it also highlights the human-made carvings, creating a beautiful combination of natural and human designs...
