19C American Tiger Oak Side Table with Claw and Rock Crystal Feet

About the Item

Presenting a lovely 19C American tiger oak side table with claw and rock crystal feet. A CLASSIC piece of Western Americana furniture from circa 1860-80. These types of side tables turn up in the American Heartland and were pieces that were specifically made for ‘pioneers’ settling the ‘Western Frontiers’. They were constructed so that they could be easily dismantled for transport and re-assembled upon settlement. Made of beautifully patinated tiger oak, the table has a square table top comprising of 4 interlocking oak planks. The legs are turned and form a twisted style (similar to barley twist). They slot into carved holes on the underside of the table top and are almost 45% in angle downwards. They are secured at the mid-lower section by a tiger oak carved shelf and they end in cast tin/iron feet which end in claw feet holding a rock crystal globe/ball. Beautiful rustic simplicity with a “touch” of character with the feet! Provenance: From a Texas Estate. Condition: Good condition. Top and shelf restored to original condition. Some cracks to the rock crystal feet but not noticeable.

  • Early 19th Century American Sheraton Tilt-Top Table of Neat Proportions
    Located in Dallas, TX
PRESENTING a GORGEOUS Early 19C American Sheraton Tilt top Table of very desirable neat proportions. Made in America, possibly New York or New England, circa 1800. Made of Walnut, cherrywood and satinwood. The table is diamond in shape and the turned tripod base and feet appear to be made of walnut. The feet have beautifully simple, pointed toe feet …. ‘classic’ examples of ‘period’ American side tables of this Era! The square platform, attaching to the top to the base, has a brass catch/latch insert, with a ‘period’ brass button clasp on the underside of the table top, for the tilting mechanism. The square table top, itself, appears to be mainly cherry wood for the central square section, which in turn is then encased in a walnut square border and edged with a beautifully patinated striped satinwood. The central diamond on the table top is likewise a striped/burl satinwood of very high quality, edged with boxwood. There is a visible crack on the top and it appears that at some stage in its history, someone turned the table top 90 degrees, so that the baton supports underneath would support the weakened section with the crack. We have no doubt, however, that the top is original to the base and not a ‘marriage’, as the line (as one can see in the photos) on the base of the top where the batons were previously located perfectly matches the existing batons. The table is very ‘stable’ but the top (once locked in the down position) has a very slight lean towards the repaired cracked section. This is not significant and does not detract from the beauty and utility of this piece. We have, however, reflected these repairs, etc. in our pricing. It is also obvious, that the table was ‘always’ diamond shaped. It is the use of the cherry and walnut, coupled with the toe feet, that tells us, that this is ‘unmistakably’ an American Sheraton piece. Provenance: From an Outstanding Private Dallas Collection. Condition: Very good. See the full listing (above) for more detail on minor defects. Dimensions: 26.75 inches tall with top down, The table top is 17.2 inches x 17.8 inches With the top tilted it is 39.25 inches Tall and has a depth/width at the feet of 19.75 inches. • 19C French Gilt Metal 12 Light Phoenix Chandelier with Swarovski Crystal
    Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a stunning 19C French gilt metal 12 light phoenix chandelier with Swarovski crystal. This chandelier pre-dates the advent of electricity and originally would have held candles. Made in France circa 1860 it was converted to electrical use in the early 20th Century, circa 1920. We can deduce this from the holes that were drilled into the piece to convert it and to install the wiring. Very ‘Rococo’ in style it has 4 branches, each holding 3 lights (12 in total). The branches are scrolling and flowing vine leaves. The light sockets have tulip like holders which sit on and a large starburst shaped flower. The base section ends in a downward pointing flower. The central and top sections again have scrolling vine leaves, separated by a large starburst shaped flower. The crown is a large starburst shaped flower/leaf. What makes this chandelier truly unique are the 4 ‘Phoenix’ birds around the top of the light section, each with a flower petal underneath. They are unmistakeably ‘Phoenix’ birds ! The chandelier has approximately 50+ large Swarovski Crystal faceted pendant drops. We still get a ‘chuckle’ from the fact that this stunningly rare chandelier features the ‘Phoenix”. We acquired it from a high-end estate here in Dallas from a Mansion built in 1929. When we acquired it, it was in pieces, albeit the pieces were all there in a large box (save the crystal). All the wiring was gone and one branch was broken. We repaired the broken branch, re-wired it, re-assembled it and used gorgeous 1960’s Swarovski crystals to replace the missing originals ….. only then did we notice the birds ….. TRULY … ‘The Rise of the Phoenix from the Ashes’ !!!! LOL The crystal alone on this, is worth over $2k. The phoenix is an immortal bird associated with Greek mythology (with analogs in many cultures) that cyclically regenerates or is otherwise born again. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by rising from the ashes of its predecessor. Some legends say it dies in a show of flames and combustion, others that it simply dies and decomposes before being born again. In the Motif-Index of Folk-Literature, a tool used by folklorists, the phoenix is classified as motif B32. The origin of the phoenix has been attributed to Ancient Egypt by Herodotus and later 19th-century scholars, but other scholars think the Egyptian texts may have been influenced by classical folklore. Over time the phoenix motif spread and gained a variety of new associations; Herodotus, Lucan, Pliny the Elder, Pope Clement I, Lactantius, Ovid, and Isidore of Seville are among those who have contributed to the retelling and transmission of the phoenix motif. Over time, extending beyond its origins, the phoenix could variously “symbolize renewal in general as well as the sun, time, the Empire, metempsychosis, consecration, resurrection, life in the heavenly Paradise, Christ, Mary, virginity, the exceptional man, and certain aspects of Christian life”. Some scholars have claimed that the poem De ave phoenice may present the mythological phoenix motif as a symbol of Christ’s resurrection...
